Avoid These Real-Life Horror Stories

When printers give you a low-ball price to get an order, they often make up the difference by cutting corners on the shipping. Each of the below examples has happened when authors or publishers have printed on their own and had their books shipped to the IAPC warehouse for storage:

What's That Smell??

An author got a great price from a printer for printing and shipping, and decided to use them instead of us, but still wanted to have the books sent to us for storage and fulfillment.

When the container arrived at our warehouse, we opened it and immediately had to close it again. The terrible smell was overwhelming, and we needed masks to enter it.

Apparently, in a bid to save money, the low-cost printer decided to pack the books on old, wet, wooden pallets that weren't properly treated to resist mold and mildew.

Sadly, all 10,000 books needed to be destroyed, and the printer refused to refund the author - it was one of the saddest cases we've ever seen.

How Many Were Damaged??

Another author got sucked in my the promise of very low printing and shipping prices, but unfortunately didn't read the fine print on their contract very carefully.

If they had, they may have seen that the printer was planning to ship their 2,000 unit order in 100 individual cartons or 20 books each, rather than on pallets, which are far more secure.

When the cartons arrived - a bunch each day over more than a week - nearly 30% of them were ripped or crushed, with over 50% of the books damaged so badly they needed to be thrown out.

The author lost over 300 units - 15% of their total order, and none of it was refunded.

My Books Are Where??

Sadly, this one happens far too frequently.

Printers often provide very low prices by cutting out one of the most expensive parts of the shipping process: domestic trucking.

Instead, they simply price the books to ship to port, but not to the final destination. Even worse, the author doesn't find all of that out until it's too late and the books have been at port for a few days.

At that point, the author needs to arrange for someone to pick up the books, while also paying for expensive storage fees at the port for the extra days they've been there - culminating in more time and a lot more money than the author budgeted for.

Don't let these real-life, shipping-related horror stories happen to you - let the professionals at IAPC take care of your printing and shipping and make sure your products arrive safely wherever they're supposed to go.
